Between 1908 and 1909, Peter G. Wells built two stores in Gladstone.
The first store was located mid-block, between Dartmouth St. and Clarendon St. on Portland Ave., and across the trolly tracks from the Niles Store and the Gladstone Depot. The depot was on the east side of Portland Ave., the third building south of the Dartmouth St./Portland Ave. intersection. The building remains, but the top floor has been removed.
In 1909, he built a second store. Newspaper accounts describe it as being at the same location as the first.
Take a look at these photos of the two Wells Store. Can you tell us the "real" location of the second store? Send us your thoughts and ideas. If your historical theory checks out, we'll send you a book. Read the entire story of Peter G. Wells and his stores in the Gladstone City Newsletter for September 2023.
